Dungeon Defenders [2011]

Popular Unreal Engine-powered mobile game Dungeon Defenders is jumping from iOS/Android to consoles and the PC. Trendy Entertainment’s hack ‘n slash will be available.

“The console version of Dungeon Defenders has more content, more depth and more challenge than many full retail boxed games,” Trendy’s Jeremy Stieglitz claimed. “So we can’t wait to get it into players’ hands so they can experience this epic role playing game as it was intended to be played.”

Perhaps one of Dungeon Defenders’ biggest innovations is its use of GameSpy’s “Open” program, which enables cross-platform multiplayer. PC, Android, iOS and PS3 players will all be able to play with each other simultaneously.

Call of Juarez: The Cartel [2011]

On July 4, 2011, the offices of the Drug Enforcement Administration are bombed by unknown assailants. Assistant Deputy Director Shane Dickson enlists Ben McCall, along with FBI agent Kimberly Evans and DEA agent Eddie Guerra. to track down the culprits, with the Mendoza Cartel and Antonio Alvarez as prime suspects. She informs them of the late Patrick Stone, who was investigating the Cartel up until his death in the bombings. They are also tasked with protecting Stone’s only daughter, Jessica, a key informant in the investigation, whom they place under witness protection. Kim reveals that the Cartel has been purchasing military-grade hardware from an unknown source.

The trio proceeds to strike at the Cartel through their distributors—domestic street gangs, such as the Araña and the Rolling 50’s. They burn cannabis fields, raid a gang house, disrupt a sex trafficking ring, and intercept a large shipment of cash following an extensive car chase and gunfight.

Dirt 3 [2011]

Dirt 3 (stylised DiRT 3) is a rallying videogame and the third in the Dirt series of the Colin McRae Rally series, developed and published by Codemasters, although the “Colin McRae” tag has been completely removed from this iteration (having been previously been removed from American versions of previous games in the series). The game was released in Europe and North America on the 24 May 2011, and two days later in Australia for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. The Japanese version of Dirt 3 is scheduled to be released on the 25 August 2011.

Infamous 2 [2011]

As many people who personally know me can tell that I’m not a serious comic-book or superhero fan. My favorite hero wasn’t a superhero at all, just a person with some nifty gadgets (Batman). That didn’t stop me from enjoying Infamous 2. I wasn’t a huge fan of Infamous 1, but I learned to love it. The story seemed to come together way more in the second, but it is still best to play the two, and piece them together as you pace through the game. On top of that, Suckerpunch has allowed a cross between what you have done in the first title to sync with your karmic actions of the sequel using your previous trophies from Infamous 1.

This new sync also allows you to unlock and use new special abilities, which adds a vast amount of replay value to this action based game. So picking up where the last game left off, Cole McGrath is a former bike courier who was given electrical super powers, and with them, the responsibility to save the city and the world. But after seemingly saving Empire City (or watching it burn if you chose the evil path) with the prelude of Infamous, you will have to face the prophesied villain called “the Beast” in the second installment, and it’s up to Cole to gain enough powers to defeat this unholy demon that’s tearing through the east coast and headed your way to New Marais. Let alone that isn’t even the half of it. Cole, along with his friend Zeke, flees to New Marais to prepare for his inevitable confrontation with the Beast; this is the location where the Ray Sphere was first created. Cole encounters the Militia, a shadowy organization led by a man named Bertrand, and the Corrupted, horribly mutated beings affected by the Ray Sphere, who are invading the city.

Dungeons and Dragons Daggerdale [2011]

In Dungeons and Dragons: Daggerdale, a mysterious woman summons heroes to the Dalelands, an area in the Forgotten Realms. An evil Zhentarim named Rezlus is planning to do evil things involving the Tower of the Void, and you have to go there and stop it. It’s as straightforward an adventure hook as you can get, but this is just the start of the adventure, and the story won’t be wrapped up in a single game. There might be some attractive nuggets of plot for die-hard Dungeons and Dragons fans, but anyone who can’t tell a Zhentarim from a Dryad will probably be quickly bored by goofily named characters like Gavin Silvertongue. Fortunately, the plot isn’t the most important part of Dungeons and Dragons: Daggerdale.

Players can choose from four different classes: Dwarven Cleric, Elvish Rogue, Halfling Wizard and Human Fighter. As you’d roughly expect, the four classes correspond to four broad archetypes. Dwarven Clerics are good at melee combat, but where they shine is in multiplayer. Clerics can heal and buff their allies while attacking, and that makes them a great party member. I joined a game with another Cleric, and between the two of us, our party felt almost invincible at times. An Elvish Rogue fights best at long range and depends on agility to stay alive. They can dodge and are generally a good support class. The Halfling Wizard is the hardest hitter in the game. He can blast opponents from a distance with powerful magic, but is weaker in close-range combat than the other classes. He’s probably the hardest to play solo, but works best when teamed up with other characters. Like the Cleric, a Human Fighter is a melee specialist who can equip powerful close-range weapons and block to reduce damage from attacks.
